Community-Led Habitat Restoration: Lower Mainland Green Team Makes a Difference in Pitt Meadows

2 min read

The Lower Mainland Green Team went back to Pitt Meadows on March 30, 2024, to involve the local community in a fun project to restore the habitat, working alongside the City of Pitt Meadows. This event was the first of two planned events in Pitt Meadows for the spring season. The upcoming event on April 21 will involve planting native species to celebrate Earth Day and build on the habitat restoration efforts at Hoffmann Park.

Andrea Robles, the program coordinator, mentioned that the goal of the recent activity was to clear out invasive plants to make space for planting hundreds of native trees and shrubs on Earth Day. The team successfully removed 15 cubic meters of invasive plants like English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and English holly. Throughout the project, they received thanks and appreciation from local residents for their hard work.

The Green Team introduced new educational plant signs in Pitt Meadows for the first time, created in collaboration with artist Vicky Earle. The team, a part of Green Teams of Canada charity, aims to engage diverse communities through outdoor activities.

For those interested in joining the team, activities can be found on meetup.com or by contacting [email protected]. While the upcoming native planting activity at Hoffmann Park on April 21 is currently full, interested community members can join the waitlist for a chance to participate. People of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels are welcome to join, and no prior experience is required.
